The Fed raises interest rates for the first time in three years! How will the market react?
Hello, fellow investors! Welcome to this week’s BaiDao Options Opportunity Pool! Each week, we focus on clear market themes and highlight low-barrier options opportunities worth watching. We don’t chase tales of 1,000x returns in a day—instead, we focus on: what’s the logic, is it worth your attention, and where lies the risk?
This Week’s Market Focus
This week’s key themes revolve around two main narratives:
The first is the 'sell memory, buy optics' sector rotation story.
The phrase 'sell memory, buy optics' refers to capital rotating from selling memory (NAND/DRAM) into buying optical communication stocks. Last Friday, earnings from a U.S. optical module manufacturer $Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI.US)$ completely ignited the entire optical communication sector, reporting a significant year-over-year revenue jump in Q2, data center revenue surpassing $100 million, and even disclosing bold guidance on its earnings call—such as a tenfold capacity expansion over two years and imminent customer certification for its 1.6T product within just two weeks. Then, this Tuesday after market close (the 11th), another optical communications giant $Lumentum (LITE.US)$ will report its results—the market’s sentiment toward the sector hinges on this earnings release.
The second theme is macro-driven.
U.S. CPI will be released Wednesday evening, followed by PPI on Thursday evening—these inflation readings are becoming critical variables influencing the Fed’s policy decision in September. The broader market has been rising consecutively; after last Friday’s weaker-than-expected nonfarm payrolls report, $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ it is once again approaching its all-time high—whether it continues rallying or takes a breather ahead of these data releases makes options a useful tool for hedging or expressing a view.
Lumentum via proxy: $Tradr 2X Long LITE Daily ETF (LITX.US)$
Why watch it? Lumentum (LITE) reports earnings after market close this Tuesday (the 11th), making it the second domino in the 'sell storage, buy optical' narrative following AAOI. After AAOI’s earnings last Friday ignited the sector, market expectations for the optical communications space have been pushed to the limit, naturally putting LITE’s earnings report in the spotlight.
The problem is—LITE’s stock price is simply too expensive.LITE’s latest share price is around $890, and with one options contract representing 100 shares, the notional value is extremely high. Options contracts priced around $100 per share are nearly impossible to find. So we’re using a proxy:the 2x leveraged ETF: LITX(current share price ~$32.52), using its options to express our view on LITE—a much more accessible entry point.
First, let’s look at the volatility environment.According to Futubull’s volatility analysis tool, LITX currently has an implied volatility (IV) of approximately 196%, an IV rank of 65, and an IV percentile of 66%.

In other words:At this point ahead of earnings, implied volatility (the market’s expectation of future price swings) hasn’t yet reached the extreme levels seen over the past year (i.e., it hasn’t exceeded 90), indicating that options haven’t been bid up to sky-high prices; however, an absolute level of 196% is already extremely high.,This means the cost of buying options is already quite expensive.Once earnings are released and the 'shoe drops,' uncertainty dissipates, and implied volatility often plummets rapidly—a phenomenon known as IV Crush (Implied Volatility Crush)—even if the stock moves in the direction you anticipated, the option price may still fall rather than rise due to the sharp drop in volatility.
⚠️ Special Risks of Leveraged ETFs: LITX is a '2x daily leveraged' product that tracks twice the dailyprice movement of LITE, not a long-term 2x return. In volatile or choppy markets, the daily reset mechanism causes 'volatility decay,' meaning the actual long-term return can significantly deviate from '2x.'Combined with the high volatility around earnings announcements, LITX option prices become extremely sensitive and highly erratic, making them unsuitable for long-term holding.
Also, fellow investors should note that LITX is not one of those typical instruments with weekly expirations. Highly liquid large-cap names like SPY and QQQ have end-of-day options listed by the exchange (expiring on every trading day—we’ll discuss this further below).LITX, being a smaller and more recently listed leveraged ETF, has relatively sparse expiration dates available; the nearest available expiration currently is August 21.

Bullish rationale:
Last Friday, AAOI’s earnings report ignited the entire optical communication sector, driving heightened market expectations for demand in 'AI infrastructure—optical transceivers.' As the sector leader, if LITE also delivers an earnings beat, sentiment could carry forward.
LITX offers 2x leveraged long exposure—meaning even a modest upward move in the underlying stock gets amplified in the ETF. When directionally correct, low-priced options can offer significant upside elasticity.
Implied volatility (IV) rank/percentile hasn’t yet spiked to extreme levels ahead of earnings. Compared to certain heavily speculative stocks trading at sky-high premiums, option costs here remain relatively 'not that crazy' yet.

Bearish Thesis:
The sector has already rallied several days following AAOI’s lead, raising market expectations for LITE’s earnings significantly. Should the results disappoint or merely meet elevated expectations ('sell the news'), downside risk will likewise be magnified by leverage.
With IV at an absolute level as high as 196%, a post-earnings IV crush could cause long calls to lose money even if the directional bet was correct. Conversely, puts face similar cost pressures—this is a double-edged trap.
Daily rebalancing and volatility decay inherent in leveraged ETFs can also cause actual losses during downturns to deviate from expectations—even when your directional call is right, you may not capture the full theoretical gain.
Additionally, if you're still concerned about IV crush after earnings, keep an eye on $Tradr 2X Long AAOI Daily ETF (AAOX.US)$。
If you agree with the general strategy of 'selling storage and buying optical,' but worry that LITX hasn't reported earnings yet and implied volatility could collapse at any moment, consider this alternative approach—AAOX is a 2x leveraged ETF tracking AAOI.(AAOI’s latest stock price is around $135.63; AAOX’s latest price is approximately $20.18).
The key difference is:AAOI already reported earnings last week—the 'shoe has dropped,' the most intense earnings-related uncertainty has been resolved, and the IV crush has already occurred.Using AAOX to express a bullish view on the continued strength of the optical communications sector avoids the additional risk of an implied volatility collapse on earnings night.
Of course, it’s not without risks—AAOI has already surged post-earnings with significant short-term gains; if profit-taking emerges or LITE’s earnings negatively impact sector sentiment, any pullback will be magnified by leverage. Additionally, like all daily 2x leveraged ETFs, AAOX resets daily and suffers from volatility decay, making it unsuitable for long-term holding and highly volatile.Whether to use it as a substitute for LITX depends on whether you prioritize 'earnings-driven upside' or 'avoiding IV crush.'
Market hedge: SPY & QQQ
Why pay attention to it? This Wednesday evening’s CPI and Thursday evening’s PPI releases are the most important macro variables this week. Following last week’s weaker-than-expected nonfarm payroll report, some economists now anticipate that U.S. core CPI could hit a five-year low, potentially further dampening expectations for a Fed rate hike in September—market sentiment hinges directly on how inflation data unfolds.U.S. equity markets have shown strong performance since last week.,Markets now face another critical juncture of 'data validation' this week.
We use SPY as an example (it tracks the S&P 500 and is the most widely used broad-market hedging tool). Fellow investors with a tech tilt may also watch $Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ.US)$ (also approaching recent highs), which follows a similar logic but has a more concentrated tech weighting.

(The design image displayed on screen is for illustrative purposes only and does not constitute any investment advice or guarantee; market conditions change rapidly, and the option prices shown do not reflect real-time data. Options shown are filtered based on a strike price near $1.)
Bullish rationale:
If CPI/PPI comes in mild or even below expectations, it would reinforce the narrative of 'cooling inflation and receding rate-hike expectations,' potentially extending the market's upward momentum and pushing it above its 52-week high.
The market is already in a multi-day uptrend, making it prone to momentum-driven rallies when data turns out favorable.

(The design images shown on screen are for illustrative purposes only and do not constitute investment advice or guarantees; market prices change frequently, and the displayed option prices do not reflect real-time conditions. Options selected are those priced around $1.)
Bearish Thesis:
The broader market has risen consecutively and is approaching its 52-week high, leaving valuations elevated. If CPI/PPI data comes in higher than expected and inflation resurges, it could derail rate-cut expectations and trigger profit-taking.
For fellow investors already holding substantial long positions, the market’s moderate rally—combined with persistently low volatility—creates a favorable environment for option buyers. Purchasing SPY put options serves as a 'low-cost insurance' hedge: it uses limited capital to guard against tail-risk scenarios where the market suddenly reverses on data-release days.
Important Notice
Options may expire worthless. Options priced at around $100 per contract are mostly out-of-the-money. If the underlying stock price hasn't reached the strike price by expiration, your entire premium paid will be lost—posing a risk of total principal loss.
IV Crush is the biggest pitfall for earnings-driven tickers. LITX tracks LITE, which reports earnings after market close this Tuesday. Its current implied volatility (IV) stands at an absolute level of 196%. Post-earnings, volatility could collapse rapidly, leading to losses even if you correctly predicted the direction. If this concerns you, consider AAOX, whose earnings have already been released.
Leveraged ETFs are unsuitable for long-term holding. Both LITX and AAOX are 2x daily leveraged products. Daily rebalancing and volatility decay cause their long-term returns to deviate significantly from 'double' the underlying index, with much higher volatility than the underlying stocks.
There is interconnectivity among the underlying assets. LITE and AAOI both belong to the optical communications sector and are highly correlated in sentiment; SPY and QQQ are both heavily influenced by this week's CPI/PPI data. It's best not to take positions in multiple correlated assets simultaneously, as this effectively amplifies the same risk.
Entry timing. Volatility is extremely high around earnings releases and macroeconomic data announcements; position sizing should be controlled, and traders should act within their risk tolerance.
