Marvell Technology 2026 Investor Day
Marvell Technology 2026 Investor Day
On October 6 (Eastern Time), Marvell Technology will hold its Investor Day in New York, attended by CEO Matt Murphy and other core executives. The market is closely watching the long-term targets for custom chips, the ramp-up pace of projects with Google and Microsoft, and whether NICs, CXL, optical interconnects, and switch chips can become new growth engines.
With valuations already reflecting expectations for AI infrastructure growth, this event serves as a key window for Marvell to justify its high valuation. Jefferies maintains a "Buy" rating on Marvell with a price target of $325, rising to $450 in a bull-case scenario. The firm expects the company to sustain growth through 2027–2028 but notes that management needs to provide a clearer roadmap for revenue, orders, and profit margins.
Key Point 1: From Custom ASICs to the XPU Interconnect Ecosystem
Marvell’s market narrative is shifting from standalone custom ASICs to a high-speed interconnect ecosystem centered around XPUs such as CPUs, GPUs, and TPUs, encompassing NICs, CXL controllers, interconnect chips, and switch chips. These products not only benefit from the expansion of AI clusters but may also command higher margins than custom compute chips.
Jefferies estimates in its research report that Marvell’s addressable market related to XPUs is poised for significant expansion. If the company can capture greater share in areas such as custom NICs, CXL, and high-speed interconnects, the revenue ceiling will no longer be limited to single ASIC projects. The market will also assess whether Marvell can evolve from an ASIC supplier into a platform-level interconnect provider within the AI infrastructure landscape.
Key Point 2: When will Google and Microsoft translate their projects into actual revenue?
Achieving long-term goals cannot rely solely on Amazon; it also requires projects with Microsoft, Google, and others to gradually convert into tangible revenue. The market is particularly focused on the certification progress, mass production timelines, revenue ramp-up, and capacity planning for Microsoft’s Maia and Google’s in-house chip initiatives.
Rather than continuing to emphasize narratives around major clients, investors now seek verifiable timelines. If management can clearly outline the volume ramp-up pace for various client projects in 2027–2028, it would help boost market confidence in mid-to-long-term growth. Conversely, if the company remains at the level of long-term vision without concrete details, valuation support may come under pressure.
Key Point 3: Can optical interconnects become a more certain source of growth?
Compared to the certification and mass production cycles of custom chip projects, optical interconnects represent a growth direction that is easier for the market to validate in the near term. AI data centers’ rising demands for bandwidth, low latency, and energy efficiency are accelerating the penetration of 800G, 1.6T, and higher-speed optical interconnect solutions.
Marvell Technology previously raised its fiscal 2028 revenue outlook from $16.5 billion to approximately $18 billion, reflecting continued strength in its data center business beyond prior expectations. The market will closely watch whether this incremental growth stems primarily from a broader product portfolio—including optical chips, switching chips, and interconnect solutions—rather than relying on a single custom chip project.
If 800G continues to grow and 1.6T successfully takes the baton, optical interconnects are poised to become a more certain driver of Marvell Technology’s mid-term growth, further strengthening its positioning as an AI infrastructure supplier.
Key Point 4: Can growth be achieved while maintaining profit margins?
High growth is only the first step; profit margins are key to sustaining valuation. While the volume ramp-up of custom chips can boost revenue, initial project investments, customer concentration, and changes in product mix may also exert pressure on gross margins.
Therefore, at this Investor Day, attention should not be limited to revenue targets. Investors must also assess whether management provides clearer guidance on mid-to-long-term gross margins, operating margins, and capital expenditure paths. An increased share of NIC, CXL, optical, and switching businesses, helping the company maintain healthy margin levels, would support the current valuation.
However, if the Investor Day merely reiterates old targets without providing guidance on customer volume growth, order visibility, and profit margins, Marvell’s current high valuation premium may still face pressure.
