On April 10, XPeng Group and Fuyao Group jointly hosted the 'New Global Benchmark for Dimming Privacy Glass - First Mass Production Delivery of AI Dimming Privacy Glass for XPeng GX' event at the Fuyao Glass Park in Fuzhou. The strongest AI-powered dimming privacy glass in the industry, co-developed by both parties, was officially launched, and the first mass-produced unit was delivered. Yu Peng, Vice President of XPeng Motors' Automotive Technology Center, and Jiang Bingming, Vice President of Fuyao Group, attended the delivery ceremony.
This glass will debut on XPeng's new flagship model for the physical AI era – the XPeng GX – offering industry-leading dimming response speed, privacy protection, and intelligent adaptation capabilities, marking a generational leap from 'functional glass' to 'AI glass' and setting a new global benchmark for dimming privacy glass.

As a flagship luxury six-seat SUV designed for large families, the XPeng GX aims to create a luxurious, comfortable, and intelligent mobile space for the entire family. Privacy and light adjustment within the cabin are core pain points for users: strong sunlight affects driving comfort, physical sunshades obstruct views; scenarios such as taking a nap or working inside the car require quick privacy setup; and summer exposure can easily harm children's eyes and skin. $XPeng (XPEV.US)$
Traditional automotive glass solutions still have experiential shortcomings: transparent glass paired with physical curtains has limited intelligence and occupies interior space; traditional privacy glass offers average privacy and UV/sun protection; conventional dimmable glass also shows variations in transparency and lifespan. Inspired by aircraft cabin dimmable glass, XPeng engineers aimed to bring an aviation-grade cabin experience to XPeng GX, creating a new technological flagship on land. To achieve this, XPeng GX collaborated with Fuyao Glass, utilizing LC dye liquid crystal technology to control transparency through electric fields, aligning with the vehicle’s electronic architecture and advanced AI models to successfully develop this top-tier AI dimmable privacy glass.

As a milestone in automotive glass, this AI dimmable privacy glass provides XPeng GX users with a dedicated light and privacy cabin experience, featuring seven core performance aspects such as fast dimming, strong privacy, high UV protection, and long service life.
Fast dimming – top-tier dimming speed in the industry, switching between light and shadow in the blink of an eye: utilizing LC dye liquid crystal technology, it achieves ultra-fast response times of 0.16 seconds from transparent to privacy mode, allowing one-touch light-dark switching and instantly creating a private space.
Strong privacy – one-way透视 light curtain technology ensures that the outside cannot see inside while maintaining full transparency inside the vehicle: when the glass is at its darkest setting, it provides curtain-level visual obstruction with adjustable privacy glass light transmittance ranging from 0.6% to 16%, offering a regulation span greater than 12%, achieving 'completely opaque from the outside, fully transparent from the inside.'
High UV protection – comprehensive comfort and protection against sun exposure and UV rays: In the darkest state, the AI-powered dimming privacy glass blocks 99.9% of ultraviolet rays and 99.4% of visible light, providing powerful sun protection and heat insulation, ensuring passenger comfort.
Long lifespan — a million dimming cycles with no degradation: Relying on electronic-controlled LCD dimming technology, the entire process involves no chemical changes or material wear, ensuring automotive-grade durability from the technical foundation, with no performance attenuation over long-term use.
Super intelligent — AI adaptive dimming: AI intelligently predicts shading needs based on scenarios and achieves seamless adaptive dimming through external light sensing, allowing the glass to automatically adjust to the optimal light transmittance, transforming into an 'active service' smart terminal.
Extra-large glass area — 1.88㎡, leading in its class: XPeng GX is equipped with six AI dimming privacy glass panels throughout the vehicle, covering a total area of 1.88㎡, the largest in its class, offering panoramic unobstructed views and advanced optical quality, balancing natural lighting and privacy.
Five-layer noise insulation structure — creating a quieter cabin experience: XPeng GX glass features a five-layer laminated structure combined with customized acoustic film, reducing noise by 3~5dB compared to tempered glass of the same thickness, significantly improving quietness and voice clarity.

The technological breakthrough of AI-powered dimmable privacy glass was just the first step. Achieving optimal performance required overcoming three main issues: balancing privacy and transparency, ensuring performance under extreme temperatures, and managing high manufacturing complexity. After hundreds of rounds of testing and iteration, the XPeng and Fuyao R&D teams successfully solved these problems.

To address the challenge of balancing privacy and transparency—ensuring the privacy mode is dark enough while maintaining clear external visibility—the requirements for color, uniformity, and haze were extremely high. The team optimized in three key areas to achieve the best results: in optical design, precisely controlling the arrangement of liquid crystal and dye molecules to balance privacy in dark mode with transparency in bright mode; in film materials, selecting highly compatible dichroic dyes and optical-grade substrates to ensure pure tones and automotive-grade durability; in manufacturing processes, achieving optimal balance between privacy, field of vision clarity, and optical quality through precision coating and end-to-end quality control.

In extreme temperature conditions, during tests in severe cold and heat, dimming glass exhibited varying degrees of shadowing, directly affecting dimming performance and user experience. After multiple rounds of structural optimization and 30,000 durability tests, the team ensured the glass passed rigorous tests at -20°C and 85°C, allowing it to dim quickly and perfectly even under extreme climates.

Given the ultra-high process difficulty, as the industry's first large-size LC dimming glass with edge injection molding, the side window assembly posed an extremely challenging production process with no prior reference. The team achieved breakthroughs in both individual component optimization and structural improvements by strictly controlling thickness tolerances, optimizing surface stress on the glass, and refining flow channel designs, ultimately enabling mass production and installation.

Thanks to Fuyao Group's years of technological expertise in the glass industry and XPeng Group’s accumulation in new energy vehicles and intelligent software, this jointly developed AI dimming privacy glass has evolved from a mere vehicle component to a perceptive and thoughtful core element of the smart cockpit, transitioning from 'passive shading' to 'proactively understanding light,' elevating the car from a transportation tool to a warm third living space.
While camping or resting, a quick voice command to 'Xiao P' can provide instant shading, allowing you to enjoy immersive rest even under the blazing sun. Activating privacy mode immediately blocks outside views, making it suitable for private scenarios like working or applying makeup inside the car, providing a sense of exclusive security. When traveling with children, the glass offers 99.9% UV protection and 99.4% visible light blockage, fully safeguarding their delicate skin and eyes while ensuring sweet sleep for the young ones.
