On July 16, 2021, the globally renowned market research institution Canalys released the ranking of the smartphone market for the second quarter. Xiaomi's market share in the global smart phone market reached 17%, surpassing Apple to rise to second place globally, with a rapid year-on-year growth of 83%.
Canalys stated that Xiaomi has completed the business upgrade from challenger to market leader, and continues to enhance the channel momentum of integrated operations with carriers and open markets. Canalys believes that Xiaomi's new goal is to replace Samsung as the world's largest smart phone supplier.
Xiaomi Group's founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun pointed out in a letter to all employees that becoming the world's second is a significant milestone in Xiaomi's development history. After five years of hard work and remarkable catch-up lessons, Xiaomi's product capabilities have greatly improved, opening up the situation in the high-end market and gaining a foothold. It is reported that the global top-three battle between Xiaomi and Apple has been ongoing for several quarters. In Q4 2020, Xiaomi's global shipments of smartphones reached 43.4 million units, a year-on-year increase of 31.5%, surpassing Apple for the first time and reclaiming the global third place. In the following Q1 of 2021, Apple rose to the global second place with a 15% market share, while Xiaomi followed closely with a 14% share, reaching a global shipments of 49.4 million units, a year-on-year increase of 69.1%.
